The Pen Display 16 is designed to be very quiet and uses no fans.
Attach the pen clips to the display by slotting the lower edge of the clip into the Accessory Clip Rail and then snapping the top edge into the shallow grooves along the side edges of the display.
To reposition or remove the pen clips, use a gentle pull-and-twist motion.
Compatible with Kensington NanoSaver® Lock.
Charge the battery and/or connect to the computer.
Physical dial that is precise, easy to use and can be used to increment certain functions (eg. zoom, brush size, etc.) as set by the Dial Mode Button.
Switch between up to 4 different modes per application. Each mode can be assigned a different color.
5 customizable sets of 8 keys per application for a total of 40 shortcuts per application. You can disable sets if they are not needed. For example, group your workflow activities into sets. (eg. sketching, coloring, editing).
Allows you to switch between up to 5 shortcut sets.
Blinking blue light indicates searching for connection, solid blue light indicates successful wireless connection and breathing blue light when connected via USB cable.
Slide and release to turn on/off. Adjustable sleep times are in the settings panel.
Solid green light indicates full charge, breathing green light indicates charging, solid amber light indicates the device has a low charge.
Displays shortcut key assignments.
For easy portability and a slim profile the Pen Display 16 has just one USB-C port. You can connect via a single cable if your computer has a USB-C port that is DP Alt-enabled. To do so, use the USB-C cable labeled with a black cable tie. This connection will provide a minimum standard level of screen brightness (170 cd/m²).
We say minimum because if your computer outputs more than the required 15W for the USB-C spec, then you may be able to achieve much higher screen brightness with just this cable.
For maximum brightness (300 cd/m²) use the display with the Xencelabs Hub, which provides additional power. First, connect your pen display to the Hub using the same cable labeled in black. Next, connect the Hub to an outlet using the power cable labeled in yellow. Note this cable must first be inserted into the power adapter fitted with your regional power connector (see bubble diagram). Lastly, connect the Hub to your computer. To do this, there are three possible cable combinations.
If your computer has a USB-C port that is DP Alt-enabled, you can simply use the gray USB-C cable (as shown below).
* Users in China will receive an integrated power adapter that does not require attaching a regional connector.
If your computer only has a USB-A port, use the red USB-A cable in combination with either the blue DisplayPort cable or the green HDMI cable.
Do not use the blue DisplayPort, green HDMI, or gray USB-C cables together. This may cause a duplication of the video data to be sent to your computer, making your OS think you have multiple pen displays attached.
The black and gray USB-C cables included with this device are special USB-C DP Alt cables that send both video and data to the computer. Regular USB-C cables only pass data, and not video. Use our cables ONLY for proper functionality.
Your pen display is working properly when your cursor follows your pen movement.
The Xencelabs Pen Display 16 is a 4K resolution display while being a smaller physical size than many 4K monitors. This can make text look smaller than you may be used to. You can adjust how text appears in your OS settings under display text/scaling options. On Windows, we suggest a text scaling of 200% for most users.

Select your operating system and download your driver. After following the guided install, restart your system. Restarting is essential for the driver to function properly.
The Quick Keys connects wirelessly via the dongle included in the pen case.
Place the dongle in your computer and switch on the Quick Keys. If your computer does not have a USB-A port, there is a USB-A to USB-C adapter also in the pen case.
If the Quick Keys screen does not light up when switched on, please see the next step “Charging the Quick Keys”.
There is a short USB-C to USB-A cable intended for use with the Quick Keys (labeled with a white cable tie). This cable charges the Quick Keys and can also be used to simply connect the device to your computer for general use. This means you can use your Quick Keys while it’s charging, or without the dongle if you wish.
The driver, also called the Settings Panel, is where you can access and customize the settings for all your devices and pens.
This is mapped to Quick Keys button number 1 for the default settings on SET B.
Default Settings:
The Settings Panel comes programmed with default settings for the Pen Display, pens and Quick Keys. These will be used in applications for which you don’t have specific settings.
Individual Applications:
The Settings Panel also has application-specific presets for some popular programs such as Adobe Photoshop, CorelPainter, or ZBrush to name a few. If you have these applications installed, they will be auto-added to the application bar along with their presets which you can edit to your preferences.
Add Applications:
Add your other favorite applications to the application bar to create custom settings across all programs.
In the Settings Panel, you can set custom pen pressure and button settings for all the applications you use.
This is mapped to Quick Keys button number 2 for the default settings on SET B.
The eight buttons on the Quick Keys are customizable in the Settings Panel. You can create and save up to five sets of actions for each application.
The Quick Keys dial can also be customized to perform four dual actions, such as zoom in/zoom out. The dial will glow the color of your choice to identify the current mode.
With the Virtual Tablet feature, you don’t need to move to your mouse to reach items on other displays. Simply press a button to bring up your Virtual Tablet. Within this area your pen tip acts as a cursor on your other screens. Use the on-screen controls to switch between your displays.
Virtual Tablet On/Off is mapped to Quick Keys button number 5 for the default settings. We recommend making this an application-specific setting for any application in which you want to use this feature regularly.
Another fantastic way to use this feature is by mapping it to the eraser button. This often unused button can easily bring up your Virtual Tablet by just tapping it on the surface of your Pen Display.
We also recommend making this an application-specific setting for any application in which you want to regularly use your eraser to pull up the Virtual Tablet.
In the All Displays mode of the Virtual Tablet you can even drag items from one display on to another, including on to your pen display.
The Virtual Tablet feature enables powerful new ways to manage your workflow. For example, you can leverage this feature with the eyedropper tool to color pick from photos or palettes on your other displays.
In the Settings Panel, you can choose the size and placement of your Virtual Tablet, and which displays to include in your Display Switch Cycle. This makes it easy to only toggle between the displays you want to control with your pen.
Your pen ships already factory calibrated. However, if you feel the need to adjust how your cursor sits under your pen tip, you can do so using the Pen Calibration tool in the Settings Panel.
Should you find your hand in the way of system windows or want to purposefully offset your cursor for any other reason, you can do so using our tool in the Settings Panel. You can toggle this feature on and off.
The Pen Display 16 offers multiple standard color spaces and a fully customizable user mode setting.
